She had lived the fairytale life but it all stopped in a horror movie ending.
Diana Spencer grew up in privilege, born into a family of English aristocrats. And she achieved instant celebrity when she met the future British King - Charles, Prince of Wales - and he proposed to her. They were married in 1981 in a storybook ceremony at London's St. Paul's Cathedral, viewed by an estimated global audience of seventy million people.
They had two sons together, Princes William and Harry and Princess Diana became well known for her charitable work. But the marriage crumpled and the royal couple divorced in August, 1996. Just a year later came news of the car crash that shocked much of the world.
Diana had taken up with Dodi Fayed, the son of a rich Arab businessman and while in Paris tried to elude the paparazzi always trying to take their picture. While travelling through a tunnel in Paris, her car crashed and Lady Diana was killed.
Her funeral was the sad and tragic polar opposite of the fantastic wedding only sixteen years before, as dignitaries from around the world attended to pay their final respects.
Rock star Elton John modified one of his songs about Marilyn Monroe, "Candle in the Wind", to apply to Princess Diana.
