Fascist dictator of Italy, part of the axis powers in World War II, Benito Mussolini was nicknamed "Il Duce" (pronounced ill DOO-chay), which means the leader. He became the youngest prime minister in Italian history in 1922 and ruled according to the Italian constitution for the first three years.
But in 1925, all hell broke loose as he established his reign of terror, destroying all political opposition through his secret police and outlawing labor strikes. A series of laws were then passed to establish a one party dictatorship.
A close ally of German dictator Adolph Hitler…
Mussolini started to lose his grip after the Allied invasion of Italy in July, 1943.
German Special Forces rescued him from prison in a raid in September 1943. But when he tried to escape to the north two years later because defeat in the war was inevitable, Italian partisans recaptured him and his girlfriend, Clara Petacci.

Their remains were put on public display, just so everyone could see that Il Duce was done.
Some in the crowds threw stones and shot, kicked and spat on their bodies.
His remains were eventually buried in the town in which he was born, Predappio in Romagna.
